Herpes Medication Does Not Reduce Risk Of HIV Infection In Individuals ...

ScienceDaily (Feb. 9, 2008) — An international clinical trial has found that acyclovir, a common medication for treating herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2), the most common cause of genital herpes, does not reduce the risk of HIV infection when taken by people infected with HSV-2. Multiple studies have shown that people with HSV-2 have a higher risk of acquiring HIV. Researchers had hoped that acyclovir's ability to suppress the herpes virus, and its associated genital sores and breaks in the skin, could cut down on the likelihood of HIV being transmitted to a person with HSV-2 during sexual intercourse.

Palmetto Politics

We're live with results from the South Carolina GOP primary, where tonight John McCain pulled off a big win. Also today, the Nevada caucuses, where Hillary Clinton beat back a tough challenge from Barack Obama, and Mitt Romney cruised to an easy win over his rivals in the Republican field.

But first, to the Palmetto State, where tonight veterans and self-described moderate voters helped propel John McCain to victory over his chief rival there, Mike Huckabee.

For more on that, I'm joined by Republican pollster Whit Ayers.

Whit Ayers, thanks for being here.

Ayers: Hey, Paul. How are you?

Gigot: I'm great, thanks. Big win tonight for John McCain. Eight years ago it didn't go so well for him. What did he do differently tonight that gave him the victory that didn't happen eight years ago?

Ayers: It has to be an awfully sweet win tonight after the bitter loss eight years ago.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton trade blows as Wisonsin decides

Attention is focusing on Wisconsin, which offers 74 convention delegates and an early test of who can galvanise support in industrial states ahead of an even more crucial contest in Ohio next month.

There are also 20 delegates at stake in Hawaii's caucuses, a state where Mr Obama grew up but neither candidate has campaigned in person.

After eight successive defeats, Mrs Clinton has made a belated effort to stem Mr Obama's tide in Wisconsin where a big slice of the electorate are the white and working class - groups which have largely voted for her in other elections.

Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay named winner of WinterLights Celebrations: A cut above the rest

When it comes to winter, we do it right. The great efforts of the residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay are the reason the town won the award for the WinterLights Celebrations, says Ken Anthony, director of Tourism, Culture and Recreation for the town. HV-GB won in the 1 to 10,000-population category beating the three competing communities of City of Armstrong, British Columbia, District of Chetwynd, British Columbia, City of Dauphin, Manitoba. Mayor Leo Abbass said the award is recognition of all the hard work done by everyone over the past year. "Work on next years celebrations has already begun and next year will be bigger and better," Mayor Abbass said. WinterLights judges Lisa Redpath and Gerry Teahen, described the community as leaders in the Canadian winter experience. The town offers a unique blend of first class and world-class traditional and cultural indoor and outdoor events for every enthusiast.

Video games triumph as Hollywood falters

The allure of Hollywood's biggest stars is losing out to entertainment based on microscopic circuitry and fancy software.

Do you doubt it? While movie attendance has essentially been flat for six years, games for computers and video consoles have been booming.

If the trend continues, many people in the entertainment industry will lose their jobs, but new types of jobs are already opening up, particularly in Orange County and Los Angeles, which form a digital entertainment hub.

"I feel a massive shift," said Dana Settle, a venture capitalist at Greycroft Partners in Los Angeles who invests in online companies, including game company K2 Network of Irvine. "Movie studios are corporate behemoths. They're going to crumble."

Movie stars Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, Mike Myers as the voice of Shrek, and Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow came out with hit sequels last year, which helped raise box office receipts in North America to $9.7billion.
