| Mugwumps can save America
The No Child Left Behind education reform would attract married mothers. The faith-based initiative, opposition to abortion and Bush's coded religious language would motivate lower-income white evangelical Christians. A promised amnesty for illegal immigrants was intended to woo Hispanics. And so on, all the way down to a last-minute commitment to protect West Virginia steel from foreign competition. This method of policymaking by analogy has not served America or the Bush Administration well. As a professor of mine used to remark: "History never repeats itself - it only appears to do so, to those who neglect the details." And so it proved. Unlike Hanna's campaign of 1896, Rove's campaigns of 2000 and 2004 were not huge Republican triumphs - and they do not seem likely to lead to an era of Republican political dominance.
Hospital struggles to keep up as tornado recovery begins
MOUNTAIN VIEW (AP) — No one suffered as much as a scratch when a tornado lifted the roof off Stone County Medical Center, even though the nurses who were holding down the patients said they felt like they were being sucked out of the building. Hospital Administrator Karen Craft said Thursday that kind of luck likely won't continue as victims clear debris and rush to rebuild from Tuesday night's storms. The main building of the only hospital in the county sustained heavy damage and can't be used, as did some clinics in separate buildings on the campus. But the tornado largely spared a newly built surgery center, which is serving as a makeshift emergency room. “Right now, we're triage, treat and transfer," Craft said, sitting in a maintenance shed that workers were converting so it could be used as office space.
A C from Albertario, Canada writes:
I had an Apple 2e and a Mac through grad school but had to go to Windows 3.x and thereafter to integrate with work PCs. Such is life for most people. Mac snobs were simply people who never, for whatever very happy or very sad reason, had to coordinate home work with a PC work computer. File translation between Mac and Windows was a joke for all but the simplest files. Since Mac's move to Intel (something some Mac snobs knew better about) and real dual OS computing power, it's now become practical to own a dual boot Mac at home to do Windows for work. Competitive intelligence 101
You likely took credit for some wins, which you deserved, but maybe you didn't dish our as much credit as you could have. Now's the time to make up for it. Beginning by making a list of contributions each of your crew has made through the year, and either privately, or better yet publicly, acknowledging the work and the value is a good start. But honestly, it's almost impossible to go too far. Make a splash. Do something special. You wouldn't have your business if your people didn't go the extra mile for you day-in and day-out, week-in and week-out. 3. The Holidays aren't much fun if you spend them alone. I'm lucky. I have great partners and a tremendous team. I often wonder how the SOHO's do it. I couldn't. But you don't have to be SOHO to spend a lot of time making management decisions alone.
Huskies shove aside biggest bully
Thirteen minutes remained in the game when the officials stopped Artem Wallace from shooting the second of two free throws. At first, it appeared a humanitarian gesture, taking the object of self-torture away from a player who had missed all but seven free-throw attempts this season. On second thought, it was probably a decision for public safety, knowing that another Wallace free throw striking any structure in Hec Ed could bring down the old joint on top of everyone. Instead, after much unusual conversation, the refs decided he should not have been at the line in the first place -- the belated but blessed reversal was that the foul on Wallace was nonshooting -- but did award the ball to Washington out of bounds. The crowd was barely halfway through the ritual chorus of boos when, instead of doing their usual all-thumbs act after being dissed and distracted, the Washington Huskies executed a perfect inbounds play that gave Justin Dentmon an open 1-foot jumper that he made easily.
