SERT students complete second session of training
This is the second in a series of articles following some of the Kern Valley High students as they take part in SERT training course. On Friday, Feb. 1, the ECHO (Exploring Careers in Health Occupations) students at Kern Valley High School began their second module of SERT (Student Emergency Response Team) training, which is Fire Suppression and Safety. KRV CERT is a group of Kern Valley residents who have volunteered their time to train under FEMA guidelines and assist first responders when a disaster strikes.
To be an American
This has been my dream for years," said Meho, with his son translating. Even before the war and the refugee camps, Meho, 53, loved the America he saw at the movies and yearned to be part of it some day. But those images faded during years of struggling to keep his family together and alive after fleeing Bosnia. "All we could think about was what was right ahead of us. We struggled only to get some of normal life back," Meho said. The next generation Meho and Senija managed smiles as Judge Scoles handed each of them their certificates of naturalization. Meris took photos of his parents with Scoles. He filled out several forms for them to sign, including one changing their status with the Social Security Administration. Senija, 53, tried to take in what an immigration official was telling her about her daughter still in Bosnia.
